My commissioned portraits endeavour to be both honest and distinct in their means of expression and impression. I believe that for a portrait to be successful, the interpretation should reveal something of the qualities and nature of the sitter.
Unlike commissioned pieces, my personal work doesn't have a specific viewer in mind. So, I can create without the pressure of a client or a strict deadline.
During the creative process I am my only audience. I’m aware of the viewer's 'gaze', but their opinion, taste or interest has little influence on the creation. The action of creating is where meaning lies. The whole process is most satisfying if it is spawned from a place of integrity and candour, and when it briefly closes the eyes to the expectations of a real or fictitious audience.
